High Point University – Ultimate Chef Showdown

On Saturday February 3rd, a great culinary battle took place at HPU. Three culinary gladiators duked it out in the Wanek Center. Each competitor had 3 ingredients from our Mystery Basket, that they were required to use in their dishes. Our competitors were HPU Dining’s two new Chef di Cusine’s, Chris Wagner and Jesse Huber, and the Farmer’s Market location manager, Jason Colunio.

 

Chef Chris’s ingredients were Chicken Thighs, Mushrooms & Quinoa. He used these to create a perfectly spiced Curry Braised Chicken Thighs with an exotic Mushroom Quinoa Cake topped with Turmeric and Lime Crema. Chef Jason’s ingredients were Shrimp, Tomatoes & Black Beans. Using these ingredients he was able to create Tequila Lime Shrimp with Chorizo and Black Bean-Bananna Mash,topped with Baby Tomato Salsa and Avocado Crema. Bistro Tender, Carrots & Farro were the ingredients that Chef Jesse had to work with. He created a Seared Bistro Tender with a Fig-Whole Grain Mustard-Brandy Glaze and served it with Curried Carrot-Butternut Squash-Farro Salad.

 

All the dishes were delicious, but in the end one dish was above the others….Chef Jesse and his Seared Bistro Tender were victorious! Chef Jesse will be back at the next Ultimate Chef Showdown to defend his title.
